How to buy a healthy budgie?


There are a lot of questions that came into mind when you are getting a budgie for the first time like;  What things to know before getting a budgie? where to buy a budgie? Whether buying a budgie from a pet store or from a breeder is the right thing?

This seems to be an easy task for some people but still, it requires detailed attentions because you are bringing a companion to your home who will stay with you for the next 7-12 years. It is very important to consider the best place for buying a budgie like whether you are buying from a pet store like Petsmart or from a local breeder.

Selecting a budgie from the breeder is very easy because you have a lot of choices to chose one but still, you need an eye to identify the healthy and beautiful bird. While buying from a breeder make sure that the cages are clean and acceptable number of budgies are kept a cage because budgies are a very good learner and they adopt aggressive behavior if they kept in small cages with too many budgies.

While buying from a pet store, you need to speak with a pet store assistant to ask questions about the budgie in detail regarding mutation, gender, and age of the budgies because this is very important to know that how much knowledge the seller has, as this will be the first source of your contact in the future in regard to your budgie. When you have gained your confidence in a pet store, its time to examine the budgie with the following characteristics.

1-Examine the social behavior of a budgie in a cage, as this shows the budgie stress signs. Make sure that the budgie is not sitting quite in a corner of the cage. It must be active & flying around the cage. 

2-Observe the cere of the budgie in order to assess, not only the gender(Read more about the gender of budgie) but also the health of the budgie. A healthy budgie must have a clean and neat nose. Please confirm that there should not be any mucus or phlegm on the budgie cere. 3- Listen to the breath of the budgie, it must be quite, clear and silent. 

4- Observe the feathers of budgies, they must be clean and beautiful. If the feathers are clipped, please seek advice from the pet store assistance. 

5- Also observe the budgie dropping area. A healthy budgie poop is firm and hardens fairly quickly. Its poop should not be green and the dropping area must be dry. The green color of budgie poop indicates malnutrition and infection.

6- Right number of toes. Please confirm that the budgie must have 4 toes on both feet, two at the front and two at the backward of the feet. Watch the bird climbing, as this confirms its firm grip during breeding. If the legs look swollen or abnormally scaly then this is the sign of illness.
